Search for Successfully Implemented Alternatives

You can use the free text search function to find information in the case story database. Most suitable are: substance name and other substance identifier (EC- and CAS-number). You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. Substitution of diisononyl phthalate (DINP) in secondary sealants for insulating glass units

DINP was part of a two-component polyurethane-based sealant for insulating glass units. DINP is a substance for which several uses are restricted by the REACH Regulation due to concerns for possible effects to human health (Entry 52, REACH Annex XVII). For DINP, reprotoxic effects and effects on development have been reported and it is a suspected endocrine disruptor (EDC). It has been detected in the environment and humans.
While the current use in construction sealants is not yet restricted, it is not clear if it will be so in future and most industries are trying to remove it from their formulations. Also, the company tried to identify and apply a plasticizer that is safer for human health and the environment, and was looking for a non-phthalate alternative.
