Safety and Health at Work - Reporting Year 2019 - Report on Accident Prevention at Work

(in German)

The report Safety and Health at Work - Reporting Year 2019, which has been produced by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin, BAuA) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales, BMAS), gives an overview of various workplace-related data. It includes information on accidents at work, occupational diseases, retirement, incapacity for work, and working conditions, all presented in a tried-and-tested format.

The topics focussed on in this year’s report include the handling of the time pressure and pressure to perform many employees are familiar with from their day-to-day work.

At 42.4 million, the number of employed persons in Germany was somewhat higher in 2019 than in the preceding year (+0.5 m), while the population increased slightly (81.8 m; +0.2 m). The part-time employment rate rose further for both sexes, reaching 29.2% (women: 48.4%; men: 11.5%).

937,456 notifiable accidents at work occurred in 2019, which was 11,853 fewer than in 2018. The accident rate per 1,000 full-time workers was 21.9 - although this figure is not comparable with previous years on account of changes in the methodology used to calculate it by the German Social Accident Insurance (Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung, DGUV).

84,853 reports of suspected occupational diseases were received in 2019, rather more than in the preceding year (+2,231). By contrast, fewer occupational diseases were recognised (20,422; -1,372). In comparison to 2018, there was a slight growth in the number of people who died of occupational diseases (2,581; +124), with the proportion of deaths caused by asbestos dusts continuing to go up (66.1%; 2018: 64.1%).
