A model system of lung cells for investigation of bacterial pathogenicity

  • Project number: F 2350
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

The aim of the project is to develop a model system of human cells that allows to estimate the risk potential (infectious, sensitising, as well as toxic) of biological agents. This will support the Biological Agents Committee (ABAS), the advisory board of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs for questions of biological safety at work, in future classifications of biological agents. A selection of job relevant bacteria with well known mode of action is used to validate the cell system. The model system is supposed to further indicate potential sensitising and toxic effects, which are important aspects of a complete risk assessment as required by the Ordinance on safety and health protection at work involving biological agents (BioStoffV).
