This document concerns the general toxicity of 2-methoxyethanol and some common alternatives to its use in different applications. The most common substitutes for 2-methoxyethanol are: PGME, EGBE, ethylene glycol monopropyl ether (EGPE) and their acetates (PGMEA, EGBEA, EGPEA). The decision which alternative to use depends on what application 2-methoxyethanol is currently used in.

Different ways to phase out halocarbons like dichloromethane in various applications.

This document describes how a large portion of the halocarbons used and manufactured in Sweden were phased out during the late 1980´s and early 1990´s. Several specific examples are mentioned concerning what chemicals were substituted and what the alternatives were. The chemicals discussed are mainly: dichloromethane, trichloroethylene, 1,1,2-Dichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane and 1,1,1-trichloroethane.

Substitution eines neurotoxischen Lösungsmittels aus Acetat und Aceton für die Reinigung von Metallteilen

Ein auf die Herstellung von Autoteilen und -zubehör spezialisiertes Unternehmen verwendete ein Lösungsmittel auf Basis von Butylacetat, Aceton und einem anderen Acetat für die Entfettung von Metallteilen. Die Arbeitsschutzabteilung der Gewerkschaft (CC.OO.) in Valencia (Spanien) ermittelte nervenschädigende Stoffe, die schwere gesundheitliche Schäden bei Arbeitnehmern hervorrufen können. Nach einem Verhandlungsprozess mit den Arbeitgebern wurde das Lösungsmittel durch ein weniger gefährliches Produkt auf Basis von Kaliumhydroxid, n-Propanol und Ethylacetat ersetzt.

Substitution of a neurotoxic solvent that contained acetates and acetone used in the cleaning of metal parts

A company specialized in the manufacture of parts and accessories for cars used a solvent based on butyl acetate, acetone and acetates used for the degreasing of metal parts. The trade union?s (CC.OO.) health and safety department in Valencia (Spain) detected the neurotoxicants which implied serious damages to workers? health and safety. After a process of negotiation with the employers the solvent was replaced by a safer product based on potassium hydroxide, n-propanol and ethyl acetate.

Lift rails cleaning with vegetable oil esters as an alternative to hydrocarbon solvents

A leading supplier of elevators and escalators substituted hydrocarbon solvents with esters based on coconut oil. The esters are used for the manual cleaning of steel lift rails for corrosion protection, oil, grease, dust, sand and rust using cotton rags.

Cleaning of car steering components by injection flooding

A large car manufacturer from Germany cleaned car steering components, with a cleaning unit using chlorinated solvents. Now the enterprise uses an injection flooding plant in combination with a cleaner containing potassium hydroxide und 2-aminoethanol.

Reinigung von Einzelteilen der Fahrzeuglenkung durch Injektionsfluten

Ein großer Automobilhersteller aus Deutschland reinigte Bauteile für Fahrzeuglenkungen mit einer Reinigungsanlage unter Einsatz von chlorhaltigen Lösungsmitteln. Nun benutzt das Unternehmen eine Anlage zum Injektionsfluten in Kombination mit einem Reiniger, der Kaliumhydroxid und 2-Aminoethanol enthält.
