You can use the free text search function to find information in the case story database. Most suitable are: substance name and other substance identifier (EC- and CAS-number). You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. This new product is not classified and is much better than the former used product, the technical performance is better and the energy consumption lower, which probably counterbalances a higher price.

Substitution of aluminosilicate ceramic fibres in vitrification furnaces

A manufacturer of accumulators for sanitation of water used vitrification furnaces covered with fireproof ceramic fibres of aluminosilicate. These fibres are carcinogen and workers, by advice of the regional union health and safety department, demanded their substitution. Wollastonite® was chosen as an alternative product. Wollastonite is a highly resistant calcium silicate used in coating compounds as an alternative to asbestos and artificial fibres.

Life cycle assessment of three paints

An assessment of environmental and occupational health impacts of a powdered paint, a solvent based paint and a water-based paint showed that xylene, titanium dioxide and TGIC are first priority to substitute. Beta hydroxy alkylamide is suggested as an alternative for TGIC . No successful chemical alternative for xylene was found, but other water based paint systems could be used. No alternative to titanium dioxide was suggested.

Mist suppression with non-PFOS (perfluoro octane sulfonate) surfactants for hard chrome plating

The Danish EPA and some Danish companies carried out a project on substitution of polyfluorinated (PFOS) surfactants for use in non-decorative hard chrome plating. Experiments on both laboratory scale and larger industrial scale have shown that it is possible to substitute PFOS as mist suppressant in the non-decorative hard chrome plating process.
