Abstract

Alternative parquet lacquer based on acrylic dispersions can be identified by applying GISBAU (German hazardous substances information system for the construction sector). In this example naphtha (petroleum), hydrotreated heavy classified as a carcinogen and 1-Methoxypropan-2-ol can be replaced by safer alternative.

Hazard Assessment

Substance to be substituted: According to the producer, the substituted product PL 113/30 Parkettlack is listed on the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC) as carcinogen a category 1B and mutagen 1B (CLP Regulation). 1-Methoxypropan-2-ol is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database. Alternative substance: According to the producer, the alternative is classified as harmful by inhalation and ingestion, in contact with skin and eyes. Its ingredient 2-Butoxyethanol is harmful if swallowed, causes serious eye irritation, is harmful if inhaled and causes skin irritation. Ethyldiglycol is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation).

Description of Substitution

Most large producers of wood lacquers offer varieties of products. GISBAU –Information Centre of the Accident Insurance and Prevention of German Construction Industry (BG BAU) offers advice on how to choose the safest products from a chemical hazard point of view. You can find a short description of GISBAU here on pages 83-88. Manufacturers of construction chemicals voluntarily label their products according to the GISBAU coding system. Criteria for product groups and codes are agreed by employers, unions and producers. Using the product codes it is possible to find alternatives e.g. for a product labelled with KH 1, which contains the hazardous substances listed above. A possible alternative product labelled with product code W3 is based on acrylic dispersions. The alternative has been used for the abrasion-resistant coat of interior lacquer of parquet and wood floor.

Case/substitution evaluation

The parquet lacquer containing a carcinogen can be replaced. However, it contains hazardous chemicals and should be handled with care and according to the labelling of the product.
