Abstract
A Danish company produces industrial washing machines. They substituted a paint based on epoxy/polyester with a paint based on polyester. This new product is not classified and is much better than the former used product, the technical performance is better and the energy consumption lower, which probably counterbalances a higher price.

Hazard Assessment
Substances to be substituted: Epoxy binder Bis(1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidyl)[[3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]methyl]butylmalonate is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) Polyester binder 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database. Alternative substance: Polyester binder is not classified as a hazardous substance. It is, however, unclear what specific components are present. » Check the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC)
Description of Substitution
Jensen Denmark produces washing machines for industrial use. In the Danish production facilities the company occupies around 400 employees. Washing machines are given a powder coating finish. Around 125 kg coating is used per day. In earlier years all washing machines were treated with a coating containing a binder based on a mixture of epoxy and polyester - a product named Infralit structure ep/pe 8250. The MAL-code number of this product was 00-5. Jensen has an ongoing focus on using less hazardous chemicals, and therefore the safety representative and his colleagues set out to find better alternatives. They contacted the coating supplier who suggested to use a less hazardous coating with a lower MAL-code number. The hardening temperature of this new coating was 20 degrees higher than the former. Tests showed that the quality of the new coating was not sufficient. In addition, for the suggested coating no health and safety datasheet was available, and therefore Jensen did not want to use it and contacted another supplier. After a visit on the production premises he suggested polyester based powder coating Interpon 610 from Akzo Nobel., which is much better than the former used product. Jensen performed a couple of tests and was satisfied with both colour and texture of the surface obtained with the new product. A test production with around 200 kg turned out good, and Jensen decided to use the new powder coating from then on. Employees are satisfied with the new product that has been used for 9 years now without any problems. The new paint is used with the same technical equipment as before. Employees still use personal protection for the airways because of the risk of inhaling dust/aerosols.
Case/substitution evaluation
The alternative polyester binder is not classified as hazardous according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. Therefore the risk is significantly reduced. It is an advantage, that the new paint can be used with the same technical equipment as before. It also has better technical performance and a better coverage of internal sharp corners. There is also a benefit regarding energy consumption, because it hardens at a lower temperature. The disadvantage of a higher sales price is more or less counterbalanced by lower energy consumption.
