Changing from old technique for development of film to the "computer to plate" (CTP) technique in a small printing house

Printing plates, which were fixed and developed based on a photographic film, were substituted with a technique called computer to plate - CTP. With this technique, the files are directly transferred from computer files to the aluminium printing plate in a closed system. The developer and fixer have been replaced by a finisher.

Advisory methods to the substitution of chemicals in graphical production

A number of methods for substitution of chemicals specific to the printing industry have been developed and tested. The results of this work are described in a report and have in addition been integrated in a prototype of a software tool. This report and particularly the final version of the software can support graphic industry in the process of chemical substitution.

Potentially environmentally sounder alternatives to PFOS compounds and PFOA

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), and a number of related perfluorinated compounds (perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)) are used in numerous industrial and consumer products. These compounds have been recognised as hazardous to health and environment and give rise to increasing concern. The example is based on a report from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), evaluating whether suitable less hazardous alternatives can be found. The compounds discussed in the report are based on telomers, silicone, aliphatic alcohols and acrylates. The compounds are discussed as groups and not as single products.

Perchloroethylene is one of the specific substances or substance groups for which a detailed alternatives assessment has been performed by SUBSPORTplus according to a common methodology. In this document the hazard profile and identified uses of perchloroethylene can be found as well as the identification, assessment and comparison of alternatives for its use for dry cleaning.

Substitution eines naphthabasierten Lösungsmittels für die Reinigung von Druckwalzen

Ein naphthabasiertes Lösungsmittel wurde zur Reinigung von Druckwalzen eingesetzt. Es enthielt Naphtha (krebserzeugend und keimzellmutagen). Das Produkt wurde regelmäßig manuell, auch auf eine gefährliche Art und Weise, verwendet. Es wurde durch ein anderes Lösungsmittel ersetzt, das keine gravierenden Auswirkungen auf die menschliche Gesundheit hat.

Substitution of a naphtha-based solvent in the cleaning of printing rolls

A naphtha-based solvent was used to clean printing rolls. It contained naphtha (carcinogens), 2-butoxyetanol (endocrine disruptor and neurotoxicant) and volatile organic compounds. The product was handled manually on a regular basis which implied a dangerous practice. It was substituted by another solvent with no significant impact on human health.

Substitution of trichloroethylene in a vocational training facility specialized in printing processes

A printing vocational training facility used trichloroethylene for the cleaning and washing of printing rolls. Trichloroethylene is a known carcinogen and neurotoxicant. Several options were assessed and eventually trichloroethylene was substituted by a coconut oil-based compound.

Formaldehyde free preservative for starch adhesives

Formaldehyde is a common preservative but is IARC carcinogen and CLP skin sensitiser. An alternative product made of sodium chloride and compounds extracted from berries is available as bactericide for starch adhesives.
