Substitution of lead in fishing nets.

The report evaluates the possibility of finding alternatives for lead in fishing nets that are economically and technically feasible. They have tested several types of metal like zinc, iron, lead, copper and brass. Zinc and iron seem to be the best alternatives. To find substitutes that provide sensible environmental gain, which result in better working environment and has a competitiveness that can provide a reasonable market potential as well as news value within the industry.

Substitution of dichloromethane in the analysis of pesticide residue

In analysis of pesticide residues cyclohexane, ethylacetate, tert. butyl methyl ether, diethylether and light petroleum are tried as alternatives to dichloromethane. Conclusively cyclohexane, light petroleum or tert. butyl methyl ether is recommended in the article . Of these three recommended substances, light petroleum and tert. butyl methyl ether is included in the database of hazardous substances according to SUBSPORTplusS screening criteria (SDSC).

Alternative to sodium chloride used for de-icing of roads.

An experiment in a Danish municipality showed that de-icing with potassium formiate is less stressful for the trees along the roads compared to de-icing with sodium chloride.

Removal of paint from boat keels

Seven paint strippers were tested on the keel of a sailing boat. The test showed, that a stripper based on vegetable oil could be used instead of strippers containing classified solvents such as xylene, N-methyl-2-pyrolidon or 1,3-dioxolan.

GLDA – a green chelate

Glutamic acid diacetic acid (GLDA) is a new generation of chelating agent that can be used as alternative to EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetate) and phosphonates, especially in cleaning applications.

Removal of contact glue in boat cabins

When repairing or renewing lining in cabins of sailing boat it is hard to remove old contact glue. Often solvents as xylene or acetone are used. An alternative based on vegetable oil is presented.

Hydroquinone free oxygen scavenger product for ship boilers.

An oxygen scavenger for ship boilers, that do not contain hydroquinone is available on the market. The substitution was performed by a Scandinavian ship service company.

Replacement of dichloromethane, trichloroethane, acetone and toluene by dibasic esters as cleaning solvent in a yacht company

Dibasic esters were used by a company building reinforced polyester boats as substitute for a cleaning mixture containing substances that are of concern because of their potential to cause fire, impair health, or affect the environment and the climate.
