Search for Successfully Implemented Alternatives

You can use the free text search function to find information in the case story database. Most suitable are: substance name and other substance identifier (EC- and CAS-number). You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. If you are aware of any other relevant information that is not mentioned in the current case story, please contact SUBSPORTplus.

In order to utilize information in the best way, please take note of the SUBSPORTplus methodology on case stories!

Potentially environmentally sounder alternatives to PFOS compounds and PFOA

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), and a number of related perfluorinated compounds (perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)) are used in numerous industrial and consumer products. These compounds have been recognised as hazardous to health and environment and give rise to increasing concern. The example is based on a report from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), evaluating whether suitable less hazardous alternatives can be found. The compounds discussed in the report are based on telomers, silicone, aliphatic alcohols and acrylates. The compounds are discussed as groups and not as single products.

An alternative to PVC in wires and cables. A kind of plastic completely free from halogens, BFR´s (brominated flame retardants), PVC and plasticizers.

Arnitel® XG, produced by DSM, is an engineering plastic completely free of halogens, BFR´s (brominated flame retardants), PVC and plasticizers. The applications of the plastic are primarily in wires and cables intended for use in consumer electronics. Although the plastic is free from brominated flame retardants it still possesses good flame retardancy, as well as chemical and temperature resistance. These properties make Arnitel XG a possible alternative to PVC in wires and cables.

Technology adaptation for arsenic free glass

Arsenic is used in special glass production to eliminate air bubbles that may lower quality in applications like electronics (TVs, cell phones, computers etc), for example. An alternative technology that maintains glass at high temperature for longer periods allows for bubbles elimination, without the need of arsenic containing additives.

Fluorine as climate-neutral alternative to nitrogen trifluoride in photovoltaics

Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) is used in the fast growing sector of photovoltaics manufacturing. It was initially used as an alternative to sulphur hexafluoride but the fast growth of the renewable energy sources lead to a level of NF3 emissions that is already concerning since it is itself a greenhouse gas (GHG), even if less potent as the sulphur hexafluoride. Fluorine gas can be used as a replacement because it is not a GHG, but special protective and preventive measures have to be taken because this alternative has its own hazards.

Dry air as alternative to sulphur hexafluoride for switchgears

Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) has properties that made it used on a large scale in various applications, including as insulator in electricity power systems. Since it has been proven to be a very powerful greenhouse gas, alternatives were sought. Dry air can be used to substitute SF6 in electric switchgears.
