Substitution of phosphates in household detergents

This project focuses on the consequences of a possible ban of phosphate in laundry and automatic dishwashing detergents. Based on the results of a screening and a risk assessment of the substances with highest risk a ban of phosphate in laundry detergents will not lead to toxic effects in the aquatic environment but it will improve the situation.

Component cleaning from the waste incineration plant by low-pressure spray washer

A well-known waste disposer and energy supplier from Germany substituted hydrocarbon solvents with heated aqueous cleaner on a wash stand. This cleaning method is used to remove mud, dust, oil and grease of components from repair- and maintenance purpose.

Assessment, development and demonstration of alternatives for n-methyl pyrrolidone

This is a report from a project investigating the alternatives to n-methyl pyrrolidone. The investigated uses for the substance are stripping of paint and furniture, precision cleaning, pharmaceutical penetration enhancer and in personal care products. For stripping and precision cleaning a more thorough alternatives assessment including function and cost was performed, while for the pharmaceutical and personal care applications it was only stated that corresponding products exists without having to use this substance. For stripping the suggested alternatives were based on benzyl alcohol and/or acetone, while for precision cleaning organizational changes were suggested.

Ozone dissolved in tap water as alternative to chlorine based disinfectant products

Ozone is known to be about 50% more efficient as bactericide than many chlorine products. When dissolved in water it can clean, disinfect and deodorise while leaving no residues. Generating it on the spot eliminates the hazard due to chemical disinfectants as well as the costs for chemical and waste management. Ozone concentration in closed areas has to be however, well controlled.

Air and nitrogen as alternatives to natural gas for cleaning pipes in power plants

An accident happened in a power plant while pipe cleaning. Purging natural gas was used for cleaning and it is deemed to be the cause of the accident. The event motivated the recommendation of other alternatives that are already used in the sector: air, nitrogen or special cleaning devices.
