This case study describes the substitution of Safety Clean (a universal solvent consisting of toluene, xylene, naphtha and other ingredients). The degreasing agent was used in a garage for cleaning work tools.

Different ways to phase out halocarbons like dichloromethane in various applications.

This document describes how a large portion of the halocarbons used and manufactured in Sweden were phased out during the late 1980´s and early 1990´s. Several specific examples are mentioned concerning what chemicals were substituted and what the alternatives were. The chemicals discussed are mainly: dichloromethane, trichloroethylene, 1,1,2-Dichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane and 1,1,1-trichloroethane.

Lift rails cleaning with vegetable oil esters as an alternative to hydrocarbon solvents

A leading supplier of elevators and escalators substituted hydrocarbon solvents with esters based on coconut oil. The esters are used for the manual cleaning of steel lift rails for corrosion protection, oil, grease, dust, sand and rust using cotton rags.

Phasing out toluene- and butanone-containing ink and solvents, and replacement with alternative printing technology

Electronics producer marked cables with toluene- and butanone-containing printing ink and used butanone-containing solvents related to the use of the printing ink. Both substances are VOCs and classified as hazardous. The company wanted to find a safer alternative without VOCs and without (or with less) health and environmental hazards. It now operates a new printing device which uses polymer-based thermal transfer technology.

Substitution of a naphtha-based solvent in the cleaning of printing rolls

A naphtha-based solvent was used to clean printing rolls. It contained naphtha (carcinogens), 2-butoxyetanol (endocrine disruptor and neurotoxicant) and volatile organic compounds. The product was handled manually on a regular basis which implied a dangerous practice. It was substituted by another solvent with no significant impact on human health.

A dishwasher factory of the company BSH España substituted the solvent “white spirit” used as degreaser during a metal cleaning process with a biological cleaning system named Enviro Wash. White spirit is a petroleum-based solvent which is carcinogenic and mutagenic. The biological cleaning system uses safer non-ionic surfactants.
