Out phasing of dimethyl formamide (DMF) and cobalt dichloride in piping production.

By introduction of new production equipment, the pipe producing company Logstor, have been able to phase out dimethylformamide (DMF) as a cleaning solvent. Instead most cleaning of mixing heads and sprayer heads is done mechanically, and in rare cases a Dowanol (1-methoxypropan-2-ol) bath is used. Cobalt dichloride containing silica gel desiccant have been substituted with a cobalt free desiccant, which is performing even better than the old one.

Thread- locks used in production

In afactory product with classified substances were previously used for thread lock. These substances were a potential risk in connection to breathing and skin contact. The products are now substituted to products without any classified ingredients.

Hydro-mechanical descaling using scales as abrasive medium as alternative to acid pickling

Pickling with strong acids like hydrochloric and sulphuric, for removing the scale after hot rolling, can be replaced by a non-chemical method. A German SME developed an alternative using water jet and waste scale as abrasive material. Avoiding chemicals and cost reduction are the advantages of the alternative.

Substitution of a hydrocarbon-based anti-adherent used in industrial welding

A highly flammable anti-adherent compound containing toxic solvents used in welding was substituted by a water-based product. The eliminated product contained dichloromethane which posed serious health hazards since it is a suspected carcinogen and endocrine disruptor. The alternative product contains synthetic oils and water-based anti-corrosion additives.

Substitution of naphtha and hexamethylene diisocyanate in polyurethane-based paints

This experience involved the substitution of solvents in paints used in a company specialised in the manufacture of car wash tunnel systems. Several workers were exposed to naphtha light aromatic fraction (carcinogenic and mutagen) and to hexamethylene diisocyanate (sensitiser and endocrine disruptor). Trade union intervention managed to achieve the substitution of these paints by Tribo system electrostatic powder coatings that do not require solvents.

Solvents used in coatings may contain substances that are hazardous to health and the environment. An alternative solvent free technology uses plasma and powder materials to obtain high quality coatings with variable thickness, on various surfaces. The technology is also applicable for 3D objects.

Removal of Trichloroethylene in the production of car accessories

Trichloroethylene was used in a plant that manufactures car parts to clean steel parts of the air conditioning and assisted driving systems. Trichloroethylene was replaced by a closed washing system based on soap and water.
