Hazard Assessment

Substances to be substituted: Cumene hydroperoxide is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database. Cumene is possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), according to the IARC Monographs. It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC). Maleic acid may cause an allergic skin reaction, according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC). Alternative substance: The alternative products do not contain any classified ingredients.

Description of Substitution

The production plant has a Zero Harm Policy aiming to cause as little as possible impact to employees’ healthand safety and the environment – both in the factories and where theitems are installed.Previously two products were used for thread locking: Loctite 243 and Loctite 271. These products both have a high MAL code (Loctite 243 MAL 2-3 and Loctite 271 MAL 3-5) caused by ingredients with a potential risk of evaporating (breathing) and skin contact. Both products are designated as irritant (Xi), Loctite 243 is classified H317 potential allergenic and Loctite 271 is classified H319/H335 irritating eyes and breathing organs. Basically because of the relatively high MAL codes the Danishfactory wished to substitute thesetwo products to less dangerous products. The EHS (Environment Health & Safety) department at the factory contacted the supplier and Loctite recommendedtwo new products: Loctite 2400 and Loctite 2700. None of these new products are designated harmful in any way and they have no content of classified ingredients. Thetwo new products were evaluated and tested (with good results) by the engineering department before introduction in the factory. At the factory only the new products are now in use which means fewer requirements to the use of PPE (personal protective equipment). The substitution was communicated to all departments by the EHS organization and was incorporated in the work instructions. The employees are happy with the substitution. Thetwo new products works technically very fine and it has been possible to substitute the old products in all situations without changing working procedures. The new products cost 100% more than the old products.

Case/substitution evaluation

In this case products that contain ingredients with a risk of long-term effects on humans and environment are substituted with products that according to the MSDS do not contain any classified ingredients. The specific alternative substanceare not known to SUBSPORTplus. Therefore, SUBSPORTplus has not been able to make a specific hazard assessment.
