Replacement of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEO) compounds in textile production processes by alkyl ether ethoxylates (AEO) compounds

Textile production could involve the use of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEO) compounds for its surfactant properties. Because of the conceivable aquatic toxic and endocrine disrupting effects of NPEO, a more environmentally benign alternative, alkyl ether ethoxylates (AEO) compounds, is adopted to conduct the degumming process. The shift from NPEO to AEO, while giving intended cleaning effect, was demonstrated to result in only a slight change in process and no perceivable impact to product quality.

Substitution of methyl chloroform with an isopropanol and heptane mixture, as spot-washing alternative in textile dyeing and finishing

Substitution of methyl chloroform (1,1,1 trichloroethane) by isopropanol and heptane for spot-washing has been carried out by a textile company, as part of a more complex process that included waste and emissions reduction. In this process biphenyl, tetrachloroethylene and trichlorobenzene were also substituted, but the alternative (methylnaphthalene) has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation)..

Substitution of perchloroethylene in the cleaning of garments

A textile company used “Superfluide P”, a product containing perchloroethylene (also known as tetrachloroethylene) for garment cleaning and in the maintenance service. After the intervention of a trade union health and safety expert the product was replaced by a safer alternative containing isoalkanes C11-C15.
