Proactive restriction of Mercury (Hg) on all newly designed Dell notebooks and displays

Mercury is used in Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) backlights of notebook and flat panel displays (monitors). Light Emitting Diodes (LED) were introduced as a substitute to LCD backlights a few years ago. This technology avoids the use of mercury while using energy more efficiently than LCD. Dell has been adopting the use of mercury free LED in notebooks and flat panel displays since 2008. In 2012, Dell is committed to fully transition to LED technology for all newly designed notebooks and flat panel displays.

Der Bericht stellt sechs Fallstudien mit Beispielen für die Substitution von Quecksilber und Quecksilberbverbindungen in Betriebsteilen des Gesundheitswesens der USA vor. Alternativen umfassen die Substitution durch andere Chemikalien (Wolfram anstelle von Quecksilber in Dilatatoren, Zinkchlorid anstelle von Quecksilberchlorid in B5-Fixativ, Alkohol anstelle von Quecksilber in Thermometern), aber auch die Substitution durch andere Produkte, die ohne Quecksilber auskommen (quecksilberfreie Impfstoffe, Ersatz von Quecksilber-Druckmessgeräten durch Aneroid-Barometer) oder Situationen, in denen die Verwendung von quecksilberhaltigen Teilen durch Vorschriften nicht mehr länger erforderlich ist (Schalter für die automatische Kollimation von Röntgenröhren).

Mercury Assessment and Elimination in Health Care Facilities

The report presents six case studies with examples on the substitution of mercury and mercury compounds in USA health care units.
Alternatives include substitution by other chemicals (tungsten for mercury in dilators, zinc chloride for mercury chloride in B-5 fixative, alcohol for mercury in thermometers), but also substitution by other products that do not need mercury (mercury-free vaccines, mercury pressure devices replaced with aneroid units) or situations where the use of mercury-containing parts are no longer required by regulations (switches for automatic collimation of X-Ray tubes).
