The company produces metal parts by high precision cutting. Manufacturing includes the use of cutting fluids as coolants and lubricants that facilitate the process and the subsequent trimming of parts. Metal parts were then washed / degreased with trichloroethylene. The company installed a water-based cleaning machine to substitute trichloroethylene at the end of each trimming process.

This document describes how a large portion of the halocarbons used and manufactured in Sweden were phased out during the late 1980´s and early 1990´s. Several specific examples are mentioned concerning what chemicals were substituted and what the alternatives were. Substitution of sulphuric acid with hydrochloric acid for degreasing metal before zinc and chromium plating.

Metallic coating on metal parts is often performed by galvanic processes. To achieve good-looking surfaces of good quality it is necessary to first clean the items. Earlier the company used sulphuric acid for pickling. The acid was heated and therefore some of it evaporated from the tank. By substituting sulphuric acid with hydrochloric acid pickling not only became more efficient, moreover, hydrochloric acid does not need to be heated.

Ergebnisse auf Laborebene und größerer industrieller Ebene haben gezeigt, dass es möglich ist, die PFOS als Mittel zur Sprühnebelunterdrückung in der nicht-dekorativen Hartverchromung zu substituieren.

Mist suppression with non-PFOS (perfluoro octane sulfonate) surfactants for hard chrome plating

The Danish EPA and some Danish companies carried out a project on substitution of polyfluorinated (PFOS) surfactants for use in non-decorative hard chrome plating. Experiments on both laboratory scale and larger industrial scale have shown that it is possible to substitute PFOS as mist suppressant in the non-decorative hard chrome plating process.
