Verzicht auf Trichlorethylen in der Metallteileherstellung

Die Firma fertigt Metallteile mit Hochpräzisionsschnitt. Die Fertigung schließt den Gebrauch von Kühlschmierstoffen ein, die den Schneideprozess und das anschließende Trimmen der Teile ermöglichen. Die getrimmten Metallteile werden mit Trichlorethylen gewaschen/ entfettet. Die Firma hat das zur Reinigung am Ende eines jeden Trimmvorgangs angewandte Trichlorethylen durch eine wasserbasierte Reinigunsanlage ersetzt.

Removal of trichloroethylene in the manufacture of metal parts

The company produces metal parts by high precision cutting. Manufacturing includes the use of cutting fluids as coolants and lubricants that facilitate the process and the subsequent trimming of parts. Metal parts were then washed / degreased with trichloroethylene. The company installed a water-based cleaning machine to substitute trichloroethylene at the end of each trimming process.

Different ways to phase out halocarbons like dichloromethane in various applications.

This document describes how a large portion of the halocarbons used and manufactured in Sweden were phased out during the late 1980´s and early 1990´s. Several specific examples are mentioned concerning what chemicals were substituted and what the alternatives were. The chemicals discussed are mainly: dichloromethane, trichloroethylene, 1,1,2-Dichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane and 1,1,1-trichloroethane.

Substitution of sulphuric acid with hydrochloric acid for degreasing metal before zinc and chromium plating.

Metallic coating on metal parts is often performed by galvanic processes. To achieve good-looking surfaces of good quality it is necessary to first clean the items. Earlier the company used sulphuric acid for pickling. The acid was heated and therefore some of it evaporated from the tank. By substituting sulphuric acid with hydrochloric acid pickling not only became more efficient, moreover, hydrochloric acid does not need to be heated.

Galvanic processes with acid zinc instead of cyanide zinc.

An electroplating company in Denmark made changes in the production process for galvanising. They substituted zinc cyanide by zinc chloride.

Die Fasern sind karzinogen, und die Arbeitnehmer verlangten auf den Rat der Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsabteilung der regionalen Gewerkschaft hin ihre Substitution. Wollastonit® wurde als Alternativprodukt ausgewählt. Wollastonit ist ein hochbeständiges Calciumsilikat, das in der Ummantelung von Stoffen als eine Alternative zu Asbest oder künstlichen Fasern verwendet wird.

Substitution of aluminosilicate ceramic fibres in vitrification furnaces

A manufacturer of accumulators for sanitation of water used vitrification furnaces covered with fireproof ceramic fibres of aluminosilicate. These fibres are carcinogen and workers, by advice of the regional union health and safety department, demanded their substitution. Wollastonite® was chosen as an alternative product. Wollastonite is a highly resistant calcium silicate used in coating compounds as an alternative to asbestos and artificial fibres.

This document describes the best available techniques for surface treatment of metals and plastics. Substitution possibilities for EDTA, PFOS, zinc cyanide, copper cyanide and hexavalent chromium are mentioned.

Das Lösungsmittel wurde verwendet, um die Metalloberflächen per Hand zu reinigen. Auf Nachdruck der Arbeitnehmer wurde das Lösungsmittel mit einer sichereren Alternative substituiert, die Propan-2-ol und Aceton enthält.

Substitution of toluene used as a solvent during the manufacture of sinks and other stainless-steel articles.

A company that manufactures sinks and other articles made of stainless steel used to apply a solvent that contained toluene, acetone and methanol. The solvent was used manually to clean the metal surfaces. Due to workers pressure the solvent was substituted with a safer alternative containing propan-2-ol and acetone.
