Case story database

Search for Successfully Implemented Alternatives

You can use the free text search function to find information in the case story database. Most suitable are: substance name and other substance identifier (EC- and CAS-number). You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. If you are aware of any other relevant information that is not mentioned in the current case story, please contact SUBSPORTplus.

In order to utilize information in the best way, please take note of the SUBSPORTplus methodology on case stories!

EN ivy as alternative to metal-based nanoparticles for UV skin protection

Titanium dioxide is used in skin care cosmetics to protect against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Because Titanium dioxide as nanoparticles is classified as a group 2B carcinogen (IARC), 1A or 1B carcinogen (CLP Regulation) as listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC) and has been subject to debates regarding other hazards, there are current researches for alternatives. EN ivy nanoparticles may be one of them.

Glues from renewable resources for panel board manufacture

Urea-formol adhesives are largely used in the wood products industries. Construction materials are the main source of formaldehyde emissions in the indoor environment. Therefore, it is necessary to find new natural alternatives to produce wood adhesives. The project allowed developing and validating extraction process for tannins, based on aqueous extraction, and lignin. These extracted compounds were successfully inserted in adhesives to develop a formula without formaldehyde. The mechanical properties of the panel board produced with this new adhesive responded to European standard.
