A company that manufactures sinks and other articles made of stainless steel used to apply a solvent that contained toluene, acetone and methanol. The solvent was used manually to clean the metal surfaces. Due to workers pressure the solvent was substituted with a safer alternative containing propan-2-ol and acetone.

These substances had a high potential risk in connection to allergenic reactions and one of them was also known as carcinogenic. The product is now substituted to a product without any classified ingredients.

Substitution von Methanol und Borax in der Goldschmuckproduktion.

Einer der größten Hersteller von Goldschmuck in Dänemark hat erfolgreich den methanol- und boraxhaltigen Zusatz Flux V für Schweißbrennstoffe substituiert. Als Alternative wird eine Aceton/Wasserstoff-Mischung eingesetzt. Abgesehen vom Vorteil der Vermeidung von Borax und Methanol hat die geringere Temperatur der Schweißflamme das Präzisionsschweißen vereinfacht.

Substitution von Flusssäure bei der Herstellung von Goldschmuck

Einer der größten Goldschmuck-Hersteller Dänemarks hat Flusssäure erfolgreich durch Schwefelsäure substituiert. Die Säurebehandlung ist notwendig, um die Abdruckmasse aus der Modellierform zu entfernen. Im Gegensatz zu Flusssäure ist Schwefelsäure nicht immer in der Lage, alle Gipsrückstände zu entfernen, so dass in manchen Fällen eine manuelle Behandlung erfolgen muss. Mit Flusssäure zu arbeiten ist höchst gefährlich im Vergleich zu Schwefelsäure.

Substituting hydrofluoric acid in gold jewellery production.

One of Denmark’s largest manufactures of gold jewellery has successfully substituted hydrofluoric acid with sulphuric acid. The acid treatment is necessary for removing the plaster of the casting mould. Compared to hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid is not always capable of dissolving all plaster residues, so in some cases manual treatment has to be applied. Hydrofluoric acid is highly hazardous to work with compared to sulphuric acid.

One of Denmark’s largest manufactures of gold jewellery has successfully substituted the welding fuel agent Flux V, containing methanol and borax. It has been substituted with an acetone/hydrogen mixture. Apart from the benefits of eliminating boron and handling of methanol in the procedure, the lower flame temperature has made the precision welding procedure more manageable.

Substitution of a hydrocarbon-based anti-adherent used in industrial welding

A highly flammable anti-adherent compound containing toxic solvents used in welding was substituted by a water-based product. The eliminated product contained dichloromethane which posed serious health hazards since it is a suspected carcinogen and endocrine disruptor. The alternative product contains synthetic oils and water-based anti-corrosion additives.
