Substitution of subtilisins in manual cleaning of flexible endoscopes in hospitals

In a hospital in the Capital Region of Denmark cleaning of flexible endoscopes with enzymes was substituted by a product based on triethanolamine hereby reducing the risk of allergy. The substitution can only be performed if the succeeding machine wash is not based on aldehydes.

Enzymes in pharmaceutical productions can be used for degeneration of meat and for cleaning after greasy productions as an alternative for sodium hydroxide.

Enzymes can be used for cleaning after greasy productions. Lipase and alcalase can replace sodium hydroxide solutions for cleaning. The enzymes are gentler to the production equipment compared to sodium hydroxide, a strong base.

Vegetable oil esters used in cleaning of small parts from metal repair work

A shipbuilding company located in Germany substituted hydrocarbon solvents with esters based on coconut oils. The esters are used for cleaning of small items like bearings, casings or bolts from repair work and maintenance in a ship yard.

Replacement of chlorinated hydrocarbons with the cleaning of small turned items

A machine tool manufacturer substituted chlorinated solvents with modified alcohol. The modified alcohol is used for the cleaning of turned items made of steel, stainless steel, brass, chromium or aluminium in a vacuum degreasing plant.

Component cleaning from the waste incineration plant by low-pressure spray washer

A well-known waste disposer and energy supplier from Germany substituted hydrocarbon solvents with heated aqueous cleaner on a wash stand. This cleaning method is used to remove mud, dust, oil and grease of components from repair- and maintenance purpose.

Alternatives to Toxic, VOC, Ozone Depleting and Global Warming Energised Electrical Equipment Cleaners

This study was performed for the US EPA to evaluate the performance of safer alternatives to halogenated solvents used for cleaning of electrical equipment. The study could identify safer alternatives for all the tested applications. These alternatives include soy -and acetone based cleaners, high pressure deionised water and carbon dioxide pellet blasting.

Substitution of an industrial degreaser containing potassium hydroxide

In a Spanish automobile company a cleaner based on potassium hydroxide was substituted by an alternative product based on enzymes, non-ionic and anionic surfactants, and organic salts. The product was used for industrial cleaning of parts and machinery. Substitution achieved the reduction of toxic hazards that workers were exposed to.

Dibasic esters as alternative to acetone in cleaning tools and equipments used for fiberglass polyester laminate

Companies that substituted acetone with dibasic esters (DBE) to clean equipment for fiberglass polyester, reduced their VOC emissions and the fire and explosion risk. Significant cost reductions were also obtained.
