Alternatives to Chromic Acid Cleaners in Laboratories

Chromic acid is widely used in many laboratories for cleaning glassware. Because of the hazards for health and environment some alternatives have been developed as commercial products, but also as laboratory-made substitutes.

Substitution of gasoline with a combination of ethanol based all-purpose cleaner and window cleaner for cleaning of medical equipment.

Gasoline is used to clean medical equipment in hospital and laboratories. It was discovered that gasoline can readily be substituted with an ethanol based all-purpose cleaner. For hospital and laboratory glassware, a window cleaner should also be used for best results.

Substitution of sulfochromatic mixtures

Im nationalen Zentrum für Gesundheitsdaten und Seuchenschutz in Dänemark (SSI) ausgeführte Substitutionen.

SSI hat es geschafft, Borsäure, Ethidiumbromid und Ether durch Essigsäure, einen nicht-mutagenen DNA-Farbstoff und Natriumhydroxid zu substituieren. Derzeit wird an der Bewertung einer Alternative zu Trypanblau in der Zellfärbung gearbeitet.

Assessment, development and demonstration of alternatives for 1,2-trans-dichloroethylene

This is a report from a project investigating the alternatives to 1.2-transdichloroethylene in cleaning of printed circuit boards and in aerosol cleaning. For the circuit boards is suggested a change of process which does not require solvent cleaning. For aerosol cleaning products based on water, soy or acetone are recommended as alternatives.
