Description of Substitution
The Parc Taulí Hospital in Barcelona (Spain), used a dish-washing detergent in the kitchen section whose basic component was Trisodium nitrilotriacetate (NTA salt), a carcinogenic chemical that was eventually substituted. The product supplier had available alternatives for automatic dishwashing machines that did not contain Trisodium nitrilotriacetate. The only harmful component of the new product is sodium hydroxide which was also contained in the substituted detergent. The new product is certified by the Nordic Ecolabel (SWAN), the official sustainability label in the Nordic countries. The substitution was implemented in the kitchen sections of the Parc Taulí Hospital in 2012.
Case/substitution evaluation
Substitution was successful since it eliminated a carcinogenic chemical used in the hospital facility.
