It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC).

Description of Substitution

The Danish magazine Båd-nyt (Boat-news) performed in 2011 a test of seven different paint removers to strip the paint from the keel of a sailing boat. Different kinds of antifouling paints are used on smaller sailing boats. The keel is painted every year and all the paints have in common, that after a period of years they start to peel or you have to strip all the layers to keep the antifouling effect. In earlier days this was efficiently done with products containing trichloroethylene, but this is not allowed nowadays because of the hazardous properties of the substance. This is the background why the magazine wanted to test some of the products available on the market now. All the tests were performed on the same keel by applying the paint stripper with a paint roller. The viscosity of the stripper has to be high, to keep it from running down the keel. Under the application the worker wore protective gloves of a three layer laminate material (4H- glove). The effect of the strippers was compared after 15 min., 60 min. and after coverage with a plastic film for 24 hours. The stripping was performed by scraping and the residues were collected on a piece of plastic placed under the boat. A high pressure water cleaner was not used, because it is not allowed to discharge the waste water to the sewer system or on the soil. Three paint strippers performed good after 24 hours. The stripper based on vegetable oil was the most environmentally friendly product. It costs around 100% more per square meter than the other compounds.

Case/substitution evaluation

The paintstripper based on vegetable oil is a less hazardous alternative to strippers containing classified solvents such as butanone, N-butyl acetate or 1,3-dioxolan. Also the vapour pressure is much lower. This gives a lower risk of inhaling vapours of the product.
