Hazard Assessment

Substances to be substituted: Naphtha may cause cancer (cat. [1B/ 1A]), according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC). Alternative substances: Rape oil is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). Dibasic esters are a defined mixture of dimethyl succinate, dimethyl glutarate and dimethyl adipate. The mixture is classified as non-hazardous according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 [CLP]. But there is an occupational exposure limit according to TRGS 900 for the mixture (pregnancy category Y) of 1.2 ppm or 8 mg/m³.

Description of Substitution

The Danish Institute for Medical Simulation (DIMS) is a research and development unit under the Capital Region of Denmark placed on the premises of Herlev Hospital. The institute offers simulation based courses for health care professionals with the purpose of increasing quality and patient safety. Dolls are used for training operations, and previously naphtha was used to remove residues of glue and plaster from the dolls after an operation. The Health and Safety Department of the hospital got aware of an alternative possibility, using napkins with rape oil. They received some samples from the producer, and the personnel at DIMS put it on trial for a period of time. The napkins worked fine in most cases and no harm was done on the plastic material the dolls were made of. Now the napkins are in use, and only for a very small proportion naphtha is still used. The product is in Denmark called KMI-Häftremover Servietter.

Case/substitution evaluation

Cellulose napkins with rape oil are a less hazardous alternative to naphtha both concerning vapours and contact with the skin.
