Hazard Assessment

Substances to be substituted: The substituted product KLEEN PRO RZ-ST 10, containing the substituted substances, is classified by the producer as harmful by inhalation and ingestion, in contact with skin and eyes 2-Butoxyethanol is harmful if swallowed, causes serious eye irritation, is harmful if inhaled and causes skin irritation. 2-Aminoethanol is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). Sodium silicate is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). Fatty alcohol ethoxylate is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). Alternative substances: The alternative KLEEN PRO BARBELON, containing alternative substance, is classified by the producer as harmful by ingestion, in contact with skin and eyes, and toxic to aquatic organisms. The ingredients are not listed on the SDSC and not classified according to the CLP Regulation.

Description of Substitution

Most large producers of cleaners for special uses offer varieties of products. GISBAU – hazardous substances information system of the German statutory accident insurance for the construction industry (BG BAU) offers advice on how to choose the safest products from a chemical hazard point of view. You can find a short description of GISBAU here on pages 83-88. Manufacturers of construction chemicals voluntarily label their products according to the GISBAU coding system. Criteria for product groups and codes are agreed by employers, unions and producers. Using the product codes it is possible to find alternatives e.g. for a strong alkaline industrial cleaner labelled with GG90, which contains the hazardous substances listed above. A possible alternative product, containing alternative substances, is labelled with product code GG30. The alternative can be used for:

  • machine and for manual cleaning of all alkali and water resistant industrial surfaces and floors,
  • coverings typical for production and storage areas, repair shop and workshops, production halls, loading zones,
  • application in especially food production environment, food processing areas, in supermarkets, shopping malls, cafeterias and large kitchens and other environments connected to food storage

Case/substitution evaluation

The substituted cleaner is a strong alkaline mixture with pH 13. pH of alternative cleaner is 9,5. Through the pH reduction a reduction of health risks is achieved. However, alternative contains still hazardous chemicals and should be handled with care and according to the labelling of the product.
