Hazard Assessment
Substance to be substituted: Trichloroethylene is a Substance of very high concern and is included on the REACH candidate list for authorization, according to Article 59 of Regulation (EG) No. 1907/2006. (REACH Regulation). Alternative substance: The alternative product is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation).
Description of Substitution
Jet engine parts from repair and maintenance, soiled by grease, oil and combustion residue were cleaned by vapour degreasing with trichloroethylene. Meanwhile many problems have occurred, mainly regarding occupational safety and environmental issues. Trichloroethylene is classified as a carcinogenic substance. Additional problems related to the use of trichloroethylene were a risk of hydrogen embrittlement of titanium parts and decreased hydrophilicity of the titanium surface. Therefore, at the beginning of 2006 the manufacturer decided to change this outdated cleaning process. Now the enterprise uses a Zestron cleaner based on Micro Phase Cleaning (MPC) Technology. This medium was developed for precision parts cleaning in the aircraft industry. Amongst others, it serves as an alternative for solvent based processes in dip and spray-in-air cleaning equipment. According to the producer, this medium is a water based mixture of polar and non-polar components. Dilution is usually 10%. The effectiveness of MPC Technology is as follows: 1. By increased temperature and agitation micro phases are formed, 2. These phases remove the dirt from the surface and transfers it into the surrounding area, 3. Thus the contaminants can be easily filtered from the cleaning bath and extremely long bath life cycles can be achieved. The bath can be controlled by monitoring the refractive index. The cleaning is performed in 3 steps in a one-chamber spray plant. In the first step the agent is heated up to 50 °C. The parts are cleaned by spraying under low pressure (below 14 – 20 bar). In the next cleaning step the parts are rinsed using this same agent also at to 50 °C. Finally the parts are dried with warm air. After cleaning the parts are measured, tested and inspected for cracks.
Case/substitution evaluation
In this case story trichloroethylene-based processes in dip and spray-in-air cleaning equipment were replaced. The alternative does not contain any halogenated compounds and is environmentally friendly.
