Hazard Assessment

Substance to be substituted: The ingredient distillates (petroleum), hydrotreated middle may cause cancer (cat. [1B/ 1A]), according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC). Fatty acids, C8-18 and C18-unsatd. is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). Amines, C12-18-alkyl is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). Alternative substance: The alternative product Multiform Bio Trennöl has no classification according to the producer, is not listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC) and is readily biodegradable.

Description of Substitution

Most large producers of concrete releases offer varieties of products. GISBAU – hazardous substances information system of the German statutory accident insurance for the construction industry (BG BAU) offers advice on how to choose the safest available products from a chemical hazard point of view. You can find a short description of GISBAU here on pages 83-88.Concrete release agents are used in building and construction for all common types of concrete moulds. They are necessary so that the hardened concrete or mortar can be released well from the mould.According to GISBAU concrete release agents can be categorised into nine hazard classes (product codes): BTM 5 - Concrete release agents, emulsions, not labelled BTM 10 - Concrete release agents, not labelled BTM 15 - Concrete release agents, emulsions, containing preservativesBTM 20 - Concrete release agents, low viscosity BTM 30 - Concrete release agents, aromatics removedBTM 40 - Concrete release agents, low in aromaticsBTM 50 - Concrete release agents, flammable, aromatics removedBTM 60 - Concrete release agents, flammable, low in aromaticsBTM 70 - Concrete release agents, highly flammableManufacturers of construction chemicals voluntarily label their products according to the GISBAU coding system. Criteria for product groups and codes are agreed by employers, unions and producers.Using the product codes it is possible to find alternatives e.g. for a product labelled with BTM 60. A possible alternative product labelled with product code BTM 10 is based on mineral oil. It does not require classification, is solvent-free and readily biodegradable. Here is evidence of a positive assessment of the product which awarded with the environmental label The Blue Angel (Der blaue Engel, http://www.blauer-ENgel.de/en/blauer_engel/index.php). Although sale is not monitored, expert assessment shows a growing use of concrete release agents. In Germany, there is a total use of these agents of 25.000 tonnes per year (except roof tile production).

Case/substitution evaluation

A concrete mould release product containing a carcinogen can be substituted. The type of mineral oil in the alternative product is not known to SUBSPORTplus but the product is certified by the German environmental label Blue Angel for the product type RAL – UZ 64. According to the award criteria of this product type the product shall not contain any carcinogen. You can find the basic award criteria here.
