Component cleaning mainly for pumps

Abstract

An international pump manufacturer cleaned components for pumps from drawing oils in a spray automatic machine using only deionised water. Formerly, a company used an alkaline cleaner for this application.

Hazard Assessment

Substance to be substituted: A typical alkaline cleaner is a combination of surfactants and corrosives (bases, alkali) which often are classified as skin corrosive Alternative substance: The alternative product is deionised water. It is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation).

Description of Substitution

For the cleaning of pumps components the enterpriser used alkaline agents. They have a pH value above 7. The combination of surfactants and corrosives offers a good cleaning of oils. Alkaline cleaning agents can emulsified or peptized and therefore dirt is more easily remove For cost and environmental reasons was developed an alternative process with deionised water. Now the parts are cleaned by small automatic spray cleaning machine transporting the automatic fed parts by a small conveyor belt through a spray cleaning and a spray rinsing zone and finally through a drying stage in a rotating basket with hot blown air. The cleaning of pump parts takes place in three steps: 1. Spray-Degreasing, 60 °C, (deionised water) 2. Spray-rinse, 60 °C, (deionised water) 3. Drying, 100 °C Waste water is treated and reused in the company and oil from skimmer is disposed of together with used engine oil.

Case/substitution evaluation

An alkaline cleaner used for cleaning pump components can be substituted with water. For the described application it is a safer alternative.
