Hazard Assessment
Substances to be substituted: Naphtha (petroleum), hydrotreated heavy may cause cancer cat. 1B, according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC). Petroleum gases, liquefied, sweetened may cause cancer cat. 1A, according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation). It fulfils the criteria to be listed in the Substance Database according to SUBSPORTplus Screening Criteria (SDSC). Alternative substance: The alternative product is tap water and is not listed in the SUBSPORTplus Database and has no harmonised classification according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation).
Description of Substitution
Wafer frames are made of fibre glass plastic. The wafer is glued to the frame using a special foil (UV exposed acryl adhesive). After the foil is removed some glue remains on the frames. This was removed manually by solvents. Thereafter the frames were reused. Now the enterprise cleans the wafer frames soiled with glue residues in a continuous flow brushing machine by tap water. The dirt is brushed off with the aid of tap water, which rinses, lubricates and cools the brushes and carries away the dirt. After brushing, the parts are dried. The same quality is achieved as earlier on when parts were cleaned manually with solvents.
Case/substitution evaluation
Solvents containing hazardous substances for the removal of glue can be replaced with tap water. The new solution is safer and more environmentally-friendly.
