Description of Substitution

Introduction Chelates are chemical agents that interact or complex with metal ions as well as hard water ions such as Ca2+, Mg2+. Some common chelating agents used in industrial cleaning compounds include EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetate) or phosphates. Unfortunately, EDTA is not readily biodegradable and phosphates can cause pollution via eutrophication and are therefore not environmentally friendly. L-GLDA (glutamic acid diacetic acid) is an easily biodegradable chelating agent (>60 percent degrades within 28 days), that fulfills the performance of traditional chelating agents such as EDTA. It is made of the naturally occurring L-glutamic acid coming from sugar, molasses, corn or rice. It has very good ecological and toxicological properties. According to the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation it is based on 86 percent natural and renewable materials. It has high water solubility over a wide pH range and retains its high chelating value at elevated temperatures more than other chelating agents. In cleaning formulations and under harsh washing conditions, GLDA complexes hard water ions very well and shows good stain removing properties with tea, starch, meat and burnt milk stains. GLDA is produced by Akzo Nobel and denoted as Dissolvine® GL. Case/substitution evaluation
