You can refine your search after first entry for sector-, function- and process-categories. The case studies are meant to serve as source of inspiration and ideas for substitution. The alternatives are constantly being developed further. We therefore recommend that you to check in each individual case whether an alternative is suitable for your applications and purposes. Ultra sound system as alternative to sodium hypochlorite for bacteria control in the cooling towers of a university

A university decided to switch to ultrasounds for controlling bacteria in its water cooling towers. The system proved effective and helped to cut costs with the previously used chemical biocide (sodium hypochlorite) but also with substances needed to counterbalance the corrosiveness of the biocide and its alkalinity.

A disinfectant based on sodium hypochlorate, used in a cleaning and maintenance company, was substituted to a less toxic disinfectant based on a mix of water and non-ionic surfactants.

Mercaptans (thioalcohols) and sulphur compounds are by-products in some pharmaceutical production processes. These compounds are toxic and smell very bad. For neutralisation the company previously used hydrogen peroxide, which is a very reactive chemical. Now they are using sodium hypochlorite instead.

Electrochemical activation of saline aqueous solution as source for alternative disinfectant in Moscow hospital

A hospital in Moscow gradually reduced its use of chemical disinfectants replacing them with an anolyte alternative obtained from an electrolyte made of tap water and sodium chloride (app. 3%).

Ozone dissolved in tap water as alternative to chlorine based disinfectant products

Ozone is known to be about 50% more efficient as bactericide than many chlorine products. When dissolved in water it can clean, disinfect and deodorise while leaving no residues. Generating it on the spot eliminates the hazard due to chemical disinfectants as well as the costs for chemical and waste management. Ozone concentration in closed areas has to be however, well controlled.
