AI-based systems in healthcare - workshop talks for the development of a multidisciplinary and on general interest oriented design approach from OSH-perspective

  • Projektnummer : F 2574
  • Projektdurchführung : Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status : Abgeschlossenes Projekt

Projektbeschreibung :

Technologies assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to replace human competencies, such as the ability to make complex decisions based on a variety of information. As a result, they can fundamentally intervene in work systems – by taking over tasks originally assigned to humans or by altering the structure of tasks.

From the perspective of occupational safety and health, a central question is how to design AI-assisted work systems and tasks in a safe and human-centered way. A key challenge here is to align the development process with both ethical and work-designing criteria, in addition to implementing what is technically feasible. The research project, which is focused on the healthcare sector as an example field of application, addressed the question of what such a design approach might look like.

In two consecutive workshops, a dialogue was initiated with experts and stakeholders to identify intervention points for a human-centered design of AI-based systems in healthcare and to develop appropriate implementation strategies from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The process and results of the workshops will be published in an article. Additionally, follow-up intitatives will be pursued after the discussions. These include, for example, publications on creating a "package insert" and for using "sandboxes" for AI applications, as well as the development of a checklist regarding the impact of technology implementation on stressors and resources. Furthermore, a conference will be initiated on the topic of evaluation tools for AI applications, aiming to further develop existing instruments.
