Shellac as alternative to bitumen in soft or hard ground etching

Bitumen is used by some artists or technicians to prepare etching plates. Because it contains hazardous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and is dissolved in hazardous solvents, safer alternatives are to be preferred. Shellac can be used as an alternative that performs well in this application.

An alternative to phthalates: Novel plastic softener produced from castor oil and acetic acid

Danisco has successfully developed a bio-based plastic softener on the basis of castor oil and acetic acid. According to studies the product shows no adverse effect on human health or the environment, and has found applications in production of food wrapping, medical equipment and children’s toys. Novel applications are being tested, one of them being vinyl flooring.

Assessment, development and demonstration of alternatives for n-methyl pyrrolidone

This is a report from a project investigating the alternatives to n-methyl pyrrolidone. The investigated uses for the substance are stripping of paint and furniture, precision cleaning, pharmaceutical penetration enhancer and in personal care products. For stripping and precision cleaning a more thorough alternatives assessment including function and cost was performed, while for the pharmaceutical and personal care applications it was only stated that corresponding products exists without having to use this substance. For stripping the suggested alternatives were based on benzyl alcohol and/or acetone, while for precision cleaning organizational changes were suggested.

Assessment, development and demonstration of alternatives for parachlorobenzotrifluoride

This document describes the emerging solvent parachlorobenzotrifluoride, a solvent increasingly used as an alternative to other solvents phasing restrictions. The document describes the different uses of the solvent and identifies available alternatives. Investigated uses include automotive body cleaning and cosmetic stain removal. Acetone and soy-based solvents are among the mentioned safer alternatives. Function and costs of the different alternatives are also evaluated.
