AI tools in Algorithmic Management: Understanding Digital Sovereignty of Employees

  • Project number: F 2604
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Ongoing Project
  • Planned end: 2026-09-30

Description:

Algorithmic management involves the use of algorithms for organising work and workflow. Examples for this are an automated compilation and adjustments of working shifts and an automated assignment of tasks. While first applications of algorithmic management were found mainly in the platform economy (i.e. transportation and delivery services), this form of work organisation is now increasingly extended to further sectors and areas of activity. This might affect the daily work and lives of many employees.

However, data-based automation can also lead to negative consequences for employees, such as increased work intensification, increased pressure to perform, and privacy violations.

Therefore, this project aims to provide an overview of the use of AI systems in algorithmic management and the current approaches towards a senseful regulation. The results will provide future recommendations and measures to protect employees.
